On December 17, 2025, mass raids were carried out across Russia targeting representatives of Indigenous peoples. Dozens of activists were interrogated, their devices confiscated, and two individuals were arrested. Among them was Daria Egereva — a well-known human rights defender, international expert, and representative of the Selkup Indigenous people.

In this interview, Dmitry Berezhkov — a historian and expert on Indigenous rights — shares a personal and emotional account of what is happening:

  • Why are people who speak about culture, nature, and the rights of their peoples being accused of extremism and terrorism?

  • How does the state system respond to independent voices?

  • And why are organizations meant to protect Indigenous peoples siding with the authorities?

This is a conversation about repression, fear, betrayal, and solidarity. About lives being broken — and why, despite everything, hope still remains.
