Daria Egereva has been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize, The Barents Observer reports.

Her candidacy was put forward by James Anaya, the former UN Special Rapporteur on the rights of Indigenous peoples, and Eivind Ravna, a professor at the Arctic University of Norway. According to Ravna, the nominators hope to draw attention to the situation of Indigenous peoples in Russia and elsewhere, to those fighting climate change, and to the pressure on Russian civil society.

To recall, Daria Egereva has been in pre-trial detention since 17 December 2025. She is accused of participating in a "terrorist organization." This is how the authorities have classified the association of experts from Indigenous small-numbered peoples, Aborigen Forum. She faces 10 to 20 years in prison.

It should be remembered that a nomination does not mean being shortlisted. The Nobel Committee does not publish lists of candidates, and nominations are usually announced by the nominators themselves. But for the peoples of the North, and for those who carry their voice to the UN, it is a signal that their work is noticed beyond Russia. The laureate will be announced on 9 October in Oslo.
