The Canadian television channel APTN News, which broadcasts news for Indigenous peoples in Canada, covered the searches, interrogations of activists from the Indigenous small-numbered peoples of Russia, and the arrest of Daria Egereva.

In its video, the channel conveyed the position of International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change (IIPFCC), which called the events a targeted pressure on leaders participating in the work of United Nations structures and international mechanisms for protecting Indigenous rights.

According to International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change, Russian authorities conducted searches in the homes of at least 17 Indigenous leaders across various regions of the country. Some of them were detained, and all are accused of involvement in terrorist activities.

Among those detained is the co-chair of the forum, Daria Egereva, a representative of the Selkup people of Arctic and Siberia. She was arrested on December 17, 2025. According to the investigation, she is accused of participating in a “terrorist organization.” If convicted, she could face 10 to 20 years in prison.

Indigenous organizations around the world express solidarity with those detained and emphasize that participation in international institutions cannot be considered a crime, and defending Indigenous rights cannot be treated as extremism.
