The Sámi Parliament Calls for the Release of Daria Egereva

International support for Daria Egereva continues to grow. The Sametinget — the Sámi Parliament of Sweden — has issued a statement calling for her immediate release.

In its official appeal, the Parliament expresses deep concern that Daria Egereva has remained in detention since December 17, 2025. Sámi representatives emphasize that her work has been peaceful and legitimate, aimed at strengthening Indigenous peoples’ participation in international climate and human rights processes, including within the UN system.

The statement notes that her continued detention raises serious concerns about possible reprisals against defenders of Indigenous rights and undermines fundamental freedoms such as freedom of expression and freedom of association. The Sámi Parliament has expressed solidarity with Egereva, her family, and Indigenous rights defenders worldwide, and has joined calls for her immediate release and for all legal actions related to her human rights advocacy to be dropped.

It is important to note that the Sámi Parliament’s appeal is only one among a series of international statements. Representatives of various Indigenous organizations, international human rights groups, and participants in global climate processes have also voiced their support. Messages of solidarity have come from different continents — from the Arctic to Latin America and Asia.

For Indigenous peoples, such solidarity carries particular significance. It demonstrates that participation in international processes and the defense of language, land, and traditional ways of life do not go unnoticed.

Daria Egereva’s case has become not only a personal ordeal but also a broader question about whether Indigenous peoples can freely speak in their own voice on the international stage.
