WAGE Researchers Call for the Release of Daria Egereva and Natalia Leongardt

International researchers from the WAGE Circumpolar Partnership have called for the immediate and unconditional release of Daria Egereva and Natalia Leongardt.
In a press release issued in Québec City, the group announced that it had sent a declaration through the Russian Embassy for transmission to the Prosecutor General and the Investigative Committee. The researchers describe the arrests as arbitrary and unsubstantiated and say that neither woman has promoted violence.
The declaration also condemns the searches and confiscation of equipment targeting 17 Indigenous activists across Russia on 17 December 2025. It urges Russia to respect international norms and its domestic laws protecting Indigenous rights.
Based at Université Laval, WAGE brings together academics and representatives of Indigenous and governmental organisations across the Circumpolar North. The release identifies its co-chairs MarieKathrine Poppel and Gérard Duhaime, together with 22 additional signatories to the declaration.
