In a report published on 31 December 2025, NRK Sápmi tells the story of Valentina Sovkina’s departure from Russia after security officers searched her home in Lovozero. The Sámi rights defender travelled to her husband in Norway two days after the raid.
Sovkina describes the search as part of a coordinated operation against Indigenous representatives. The Sámi Council discusses the difficulty of helping advocates reach safety and the importance of protecting those who continue to speak publicly.
The report places her experience within the wider December crackdown, in which two Indigenous rights advocates were placed in detention.
