IWGIA Dedicates Its Climate Chapter to Daria Egereva’s Leadership

IWGIA’s The Indigenous World 2026 dedicates its chapter on Indigenous Peoples’ advocacy at the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change to Daria Egereva, Co-Chair of the International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change. The chapter was published online on 22 April 2026.
The dedication honours her leadership and describes her detention by Russian authorities on 17 December 2025, after COP30 in Belém, as unjust. The authors stress that climate justice depends on Indigenous Peoples’ rights and self-determination, and recognise the strength her advocacy brings to Indigenous communities.
Written by Graeme Reed and Taily Terena, with contributions from Stefan Thorsell and Rosario Carmona, the chapter reviews developments in 2025. It examines Indigenous participation at COP30, gains in the recognition of rights, and the barriers that continue to limit Indigenous Peoples’ influence in climate negotiations.
This is an archival publication recognising Daria’s contribution to international climate advocacy, rather than a new update on her court case.
