ISHR Includes Daria Egereva’s Case in Submission to the UN on Protecting Environmental Human Rights Defenders

On 8 October 2026, the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR) published a submission to the UN Special Rapporteur on the human right to a healthy environment. It was prepared to inform her forthcoming report to the 64th session of the UN Human Rights Council.
Daria Egereva is mentioned as an Indigenous rights defender arrested after participating in the COP30 climate conference. ISHR discusses her case in the context of reprisals for cooperation with the UN and notes that her detention has had a chilling effect on Indigenous rights advocacy in Russia. The organisation cites the joint communication by UN experts on Daria and Natalia’s case.
The submission’s central argument is that persecuting people who defend the environment may also violate the right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment itself. ISHR calls for an end to the criminalization of their work, safe participation in international processes, and collective protection measures that address the circumstances of women and Indigenous Peoples.
For the solidarity campaign, this publication places Daria’s case in a broader context: her persecution affects an entire community’s ability to defend its rights. This is an NGO contribution to a forthcoming report, rather than a finding in an adopted UN document.
