ICT: UN Experts Call for Daria Egereva and Natalia Leongardt’s Release

On 15 June 2026, ICT published Anita Hofschneider’s report, originally published by Grist, on international calls to release Daria Egereva and Natalia Leongardt.
Ten UN Special Procedures mandates urged Russia to free both women immediately and unconditionally and drop the charges connected to their peaceful human rights work. Their communication, sent in April and made public in June, raised concerns about reprisals for cooperation with the United Nations.
The report also described solidarity at the Bonn climate negotiations: the International Indigenous Peoples’ Forum on Climate Change retained Daria as Co-Chair until her release. Natalia’s career supporting Indigenous educational programmes and participation in international processes was also highlighted.
The article connects their detention with the wider risks facing Indigenous advocates who engage with UN mechanisms.
